Local resources for people impacted by government shutdown

Many of our friends and neighbors in the community have been financially impacted by the ongoing government shutdown. Several local businesses and organizations are stepping up to help. Efforts we’re aware of include:

14th Street Café – Free coffee to Coast Guard members

Adrift Hotel and Spa, Pickled Fish, Shelburne Hotel Pub, Ashore Hotel Bar – 40 percent discount on food and beverage for federal employees

The American Legion – Offering financial assistance to Coast Guard families with children

Astoria Armory – Free skate night and dinner for Coast Guard youth Fridays and Saturdays for as long as the shutdown continues

Astoria Parks and Recreation – Scholarships for federal government employees to access family fitness passes, swim lessons and other non-childcare-related recreational programs for themselves or their children on a month-to-month bases for the duration of the government shutdown

Astoria School District – Free lunches to students in Coast Guard families

Bayshore Animal Hospital – for federal employees affected (i.e. not receiving a paycheck) by government shutdown, you may take two months to pay your bill with no interest/additional fees.

Be the Light Food Pantry – January 19 and 20, 11am-3pm, 1572 Franklin Ave., Astoria OR 97103

Brim’s Farm and Garden – 10 percent discount on feed and short-term no-interest charge accounts to affected Coast Guard and federal employees.

Buoy Beer Company – For those with active duty Coast Guard, Coast Guard dependent or furloughed government employee ID, 25 percent off your total bill and kids eat free from the kids’ menu; also, beginning January 27, free buffet-style meal from 4-8pm every Sunday until the shutdown ends

City of Astoria – waiver of water and sewer penalties for furloughed federal workers until paychecks resume

Frite & Scoop – 40 percent off to active duty Coast Guard families

Giveanhour.com – Free mental health services for military

Good to Go – Half off all soups and sandwiches to active duty Coast Guard families

Local Coast Guard clinic – offers a free over-the-counter medicine program. Coast Guard members and their spouses are allowed to go to the clinic pharmacy at the Air Station to pick up two free OTC medicines per week

Maritime Museum – Free admission to furloughed federal employees and immediate families during shutdown

Market on Main – For active duty Coast Guard families, no interest on charge accounts and 5 percent off total bill

Pat’s Pantry – 25 percent discount to active duty Coast Guard families

Posh Salon – Free haircuts to active duty Coast Guard members

Reach Break Brewing – 50 percent off pints to active duty Coast Guard through January

Reach Break Brewing and Reveille Cider Works – Friday, January 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. $1 of every pint sold will be donated to the Coast Guard
